Welcome to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program at Unity Reed High School! I am Lt. Col. Darryl J. Robinson the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor. Technical Sergeant Laing and I are excited that you have chosen to join us.

The primary mission of AFJROTC is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community. The AFJROTC program involves a broad spectrum of study to include aeronautics, military history, human behavior, management, communications skills, individual leadership and physical fitness. We will also plan field trips to places such as the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Marine Corps Museum, Air Force Memorial, Andrews Air Force Base, and various drill team and color guard competitions throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In addition, we may have active duty and retired military officers and senior enlisted personnel come and speak to our cadets on various topics during the year. Each cadet is required to pay a $25.00 activity fee which covers administrative and other costs associated with various AFJROTC activities.

AFJROTC is not a recruiting program. You DO NOT have to serve any time in military service unless you choose to do so after completion of high school. However, higher rank (pay) and scholarships are available to qualified cadets who decide to enter the service.

The first four weeks of AFJROTC is called "basic training." You will not be required to wear a uniform. Only after you satisfactorily complete the first four weeks of basic training will you be allowed to wear the uniform. The uniforms are the actual uniforms worn by members of the United States Air Force. They are worth over $200.00 each. You do not pay for them; they are loaned to you. You will wear your uniform one day per week. Later in the semester you may have duties which require more frequent wear. The first uniform inspection (graded) for first year cadets is normally the fifth or sixth week of classes. Not having the self-discipline to abide by the policies and rules of the program, such as not wearing the uniform is the main reason cadets do not succeed in the program. Those who wear their uniform normally do quite well, as they are proud to wear the uniform of their country.

A new cadet orientation is normally scheduled in mid-August. The purpose of the orientation is to allow new cadets to interact with cadet leaders to learn more about JROTC and get better acquainted with the unit's customs and courtesies before school starts.

We are excited about your participation in AFJROTC and look forward to a very productive relationship. Please contact us via telephone at 571-598-3069, or email: [email protected] if you have any questions.
