IB Program

Welcome to the IB Programme at Unity Reed High School!

The International Baccalaureate is a program that focuses on teaching students to think critically and independently, and to inquire with care and logic. The IB prepares students to succeed in a world where facts and fiction merge in the news, and where asking the right questions is a crucial skill that will allow them to flourish long after they've left our programmes.

Scheduling Information

Scheduling is about to begin for current Unity Reed students and, to help with this process, the IB Office has prepared a video specifically for rising 11th grade students. This video details the four different IB pathways students can select in 11th and 12th grade and show some sample schedules for students and their families to consider.

The IB Programme has a long and successful history at URHS. We became an IB authorized school in 1993 and are celebrating 25 years of graduates who are now excelling at university, working in their chosen professional fields, and helping to make a better and more peaceful world.

Here are just a few recent examples:

  • The Virginia Tech President for the c/o 2020, the University of Virginia President for the c/o 2019, and the James Madison University Student Representative for the c/o 2022 are all URHS IB graduates
  • The 2019 Pyne Honor Prize Winner from Princeton University was an URHS IB graduate
  • URHS IB graduates have gone to university with athletic scholarships, including to Division I schools in basketball and swimming
  • The campaign faces for both the Cornell University School of Engineering and the Kent State Academic Diversity Outreach Program are URHS graduates of the IB c/o 2017
  • The URHS IB graduates of 2015 are leaving college and many are pursuing graduate studies; for instance, UR IB students will be beginning at Wake Forest Law School, William & Mary Law School, Stuttgart University's Mechanical Engineering Program, and Virginia's Governor's Fellows Program

At Unity Reed High School, we offer three different IB Programmes:

The Middle Years Programme, or MYP, is for 9th and 10th grade students. The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. For more information, visit the URHS Middle Years Programme page and/or visit the official IB website regarding the Middle Years Programme.

The Diploma Programme, or DP, is for 11th and 12th grade students. The programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge - students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. DP classes carry a weighted GPA and end in examinations that may result in university credit. Students may take a single DP course or pursue the IB Diploma by testing in all six subject areas and completing the IB Core. For more information, visit the URHS Diploma Programme page and/or visit the official IB website regarding the Diploma Programme.

The Career-related Programme, or CP, is for 11th and 12th grade students. The programme is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a unique programme addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. The programme prepares students for further education, apprenticeships, or employment. Students in the CP take at least two DP classes, the CP core, and a career study in Air Force JROTC, Aviation Maintenance, Business, Cosmetology, Electricity, Firefighting, Leadership and Human Organization - SALC, Project Lead the Way Engineering, or Teaching and Education. For more information, visit the URHS Career-related Programme page and/or visit the official IB website regarding the Career-related Programme.
