Middle Years Programme (MYP)

IB Middle Years Programme

Freshmen and sophomores participate in the IB Middle Years Program (IB MYP), a framework for instruction in all academic areas that provides opportunities for Advanced courses in preparation for the IB Diploma and Career-related Programs. Participation in the MYP ranges from students taking courses and subjects of strength and interest to taking the full range of  Adv MYP courses in preparation for the full IB Diploma or the Career-related certificate studies.

Coordinator's Message:

In my time as part of the IB Programme at Unity Reed High School, I have seen how the IBMYP does more than just teach students information. It focuses on the academic, social-emotional, and self-management skills that all people need to become successful in life. IB believes in the whole student and our IBMYP students join clubs, perform musically, participate athletically and serve our community in addition to rigorous academics. In the 21st century we encourage our students to be citizens of the world, not just of their neighborhood. IB embeds that idea in the curriculum and teaching strategies every day. I believe unequivocally in the education of the whole student and am proud to serve as the IBMYP coordinator for URHS

MYP circle of standards

What is the IBMYP?

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) in grades 9 and 10 emphasizes intellectual challenge and encourages students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century.

In their final year, students will also undertake an independent IB capstone called the MYP Personal Project  to demonstrate the development of their skills in inquiry, research, and reflection.

MYP assessment standards are consistent around the world. In order to maintain the rigor for which the IB is renowned, the MYP assessment model is criterion-related. Tasks are assessed against established criteria, not against the work of other students.

IBMYP Personal Project

The IBMYP Personal Project is a significant component of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). It allows students in their final year of the MYP to explore an area of personal interest over an extended period. This project helps students consolidate their learning and develop essential skills such as self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration.

The project consists of three main elements:

  1. Process: Documenting ideas, criteria, developments, challenges, plans, research, possible solutions, and progress reports.
  2. Product or Outcome: Creating tangible or intangible results that reflect the student’s goals.
  3. Report: A reflective account of the project, detailing the process and evaluating its impact on the student’s learning

The Personal Project encourages students to engage in self-directed inquiry, develop deeper understandings, and take pride in their accomplishments. It’s a valuable opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a meaningful and personalized way.

If you have any specific questions about the project or need further details, feel free to ask!
