The Electricity Program at Unity Reed High School is a trade and industry specialty program on its own, but also can be used as a career-related study path for the IB Career Programme. It is taught by a professional electrician currently working in the field and is partnered with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.





Classes & Course of Study
Electricity I
This course provides students with marketable, job-specific skills, workplace readiness skills, and an industry certification upon high school graduation. Students develop skills in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. They also study electrical theory, navigate the National Electrical Code Book, select and install conductors, and work with panel boards, switchboards, and generators. Students have the option to enter the job market directly or continue their studies via a college program, technical school, or apprenticeship program. Students completing the two-year electrical sequence have the opportunity to earn an industry credential (OSHA-500 Certification).Electricity II
Electricity II students continue to develop skills in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. They also study electrical theory and mathematical problems related to electricity, navigate the National Electrical Code Book, select and install conductors, examine lighting, communication, and power systems, and work with conduit and raceways, panelboards, switchboards, grounding systems, and generators.Recommended Course of Study

Applications for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year will be live on November 1, 2022. If you are a student new to the county, you may still apply within 30 days of your enrollment. Transportation:
Career and Technical Education students who reside within the boundary of URHS may ride their regular bus to school. Transfer students may use the network of established express bus stops. Parents have the responsibility to provide transportation to and from express bus stops (or provide transportation to and from the school).Application Process:
Admission to the program is by application only and seats are limited. Interested students should meet with a school counselor to discuss program details and modify their Academic and Career Plan to fulfill all graduation requirements.Requirements:
Successful candidates for the program must meet the following criteria:- A solid understanding of the theory and concepts in Algebra I as documented through at least a C average in Algebra I and a passing score on the Algebra I End-of-Course Standards of Learning test
- The ability to read and understand the National Electrical Code Book in English as demonstrated through a passing score on the Grade 8 English Reading and Writing Standards of Learning test
- Color vision in order to identify electrical wires
- No more than 10 absences from school, which include 'excused' and 'unexcused' absences
- Student must not have a significant disciplinary history
- Student must have above average agility and dexterity
**If a counselor or administrator feels strongly that a student would succeed in this program who does not meet the above criteria, an appeal may be made to the Trade & Industry Specialty Coordinator in conjunction with the faculty member teaching the course.
