Cosmetology students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the Virginia Board of Registered Professional Hairdressers licensing examination for entry-level jobs such as a manicurist, salon receptionist, shampoo technician, and licensed cosmetologist. Cosmetology is a two-year program of study that begins in the 11th grade. Courses are scheduled in a three-period/triple block each year.

Program Information

Transport Program

Students participating in this program will be transported between their base school and their program school for all CTE program classes on a PWCS bus daily, returning in time to ride their regular bus home.

Cosmetology Program at URHS

Students who have a passion for Hair, Makeup, Nail and Skin Care may apply for Prince William County School's Cosmetology Program at Unity Reed High School. There are many reasons why you may choose a career in Cosmetology. Helping others look their best can result in a great feeling of personal fulfillment and accomplishment. If you enjoy helping your friends and family members style their hair or apply makeup consider doing this as a profession. A licensed Cosmetologist is always in demand regardless of the economy. A career in the field of Cosmetology is an excellent opportunity to earn high wages as a full time employee or as a flexible part time job to help fund your college tuition.

CREDIT

Students attend class for 3 block periods per school year during both their Junior and Senior years of high school. Students earn 3 credits towards high school graduation for successful completion of each course or a total of 6 credits for successful completion of the entire Cosmetology Program. Two years of Cosmetology counts as a sequential elective. Successful completion of Lab competencies and Theory curriculum prepare the student for the Virginia state-licensing exam.
